Why “Best Crypto to Buy in April 2026” is everywhere today

Open TikTok, YouTube Shorts or X (formerly Twitter) and you will probably see the same headline: “Top Crypto to Buy in April 2026 – 100× upside!” The phrase went viral after four small channels (99Bitcoins, CryptoJon, AMBCrypto and an unnamed trading feed) posted videos within 48 hours, together racking up 3.2 million views and 18,000 comments. The clips all follow the same recipe:

  1. A thumbnail with a shocked face and a green 100× arrow.
  2. A countdown list that ends with little-known coins such as “Bitcoin Hyper” and “MaxiDoge”.
  3. A referral link in the description.

Because the algorithm boosts anything that keeps viewers watching, the topic now auto-completes in search bars, creating the illusion that “everyone” is buying. This article slows the tape down and looks at what, if anything, a beginner should actually do.

What the videos are talking about

1. Bitcoin Hyper – a token that claims to be “Bitcoin but on steroids”. 2. MaxiDoge – a dogecoin copycat whose website promises “laser-deflation”. 3. Orca – a decentralized exchange (DEX) built on the Solana network, praised for one-click trading. 4. Paris Blockchain Week – a real-world event scheduled 15-16 April 2026 where paid “startup booths” let new projects hand out free coins to attendees.

None of the first three names existed before December 2025, and their combined market value on 1 April 2026 was USD 41 million – smaller than a single neighbourhood Tesco. That micro size is why promoters can truthfully say “If this coin reaches the size of Shiba-Inu you’ll make 200×”. It is also why the same coins can collapse to zero overnight.

Beginner definitions you need first

Altcoin – any digital coin that is not Bitcoin. DEX – short for “decentralized exchange”; a website where users trade directly from their own wallets without giving custody to a company. Liquidity pool – a pot of tokens supplied by ordinary users so that trading can happen 24 h a day. Market capitalisation (market-cap) – price of one token × number of tokens in existence; the quickest way to see how large or small a project is. Volatility – how wildly the price swings; high volatility means fast gains and fast losses.

How small coins are marketed

Step 1: Create a trillion tokens, keep 40 % for the “team”. Step 2: List the remaining 60 % on a DEX such as Orca at a price of USD 0.0000001. Step 3: Use the team’s own money to buy a tiny amount every minute so the price chart slopes upward. Step 4: Pay influencers to call the chart “parabolic” and tell beginners they are “still early”. Step 5: When enough viewers buy, the team sells its free allocation and the price crashes.

This template is legal in many jurisdictions because the tokens are classed as “community” rather than “securities”. It is also why 97 % of altcoins launched in 2025 are now down more than 90 % from their first-month high, according to Messari data.

Real numbers you should write on a sticky note

  • Total value locked in Orca on 1 April 2026: USD 287 million (Solscan).
  • Daily volume in Orca DOGE/SOL pair: USD 1.9 million.
  • Number of addresses holding Bitcoin Hyper: 11,420 (Solscan).
  • Number of those addresses with balance above USD 1,000: 42.
  • Average daily draw-down of tokens smaller than USD 50 million cap: –18 % (CoinMarketCal sample, Jan-Mar 2026).

Practical checklist – what to do if you are tempted

  1. Decide in advance how much you can lose without missing rent or food; write the sum on paper and sign it.
  2. Open an account on a regulated centralised exchange such as Binance, Bybit or MEXC — 70% Cashback. These platforms ask for government ID; that is annoying but protects you if passwords are forgotten.
  3. Deposit fiat (EUR, USD, GBP) by bank transfer; the fee is usually under 1 %.
  4. Buy an amount of Bitcoin you feel comfortable holding for five years; BTC is still the least volatile crypto asset.
  5. If you still want exposure to the viral names, limit the purchase to 5 % of your total crypto stack.
  6. Withdraw the new tokens to a wallet you control (e.g., Phantom for Solana).
  7. Set a stop-loss: pick the price at which you will sell and type it into the DEX as an automated order; this limits the damage if the promoters vanish.
  8. Set a take-profit: pick the price at which you will sell half and get your seed money back; this prevents greed from keeping you in too long.
  9. Keep a spreadsheet with date, purchase price, sale price and reason for the trade; good records are the only way to learn from mistakes.

If you simply want to “get crypto” without trading, use a brokerage such as Paybis where you buy and the coins land straight into a self-custody wallet; you never have to log in again until you decide to sell.

Risk warning – read this section twice

  • Concentration risk: A coin held by 42 large wallets can be crashed by those 42 people selling on the same day.
  • Smart-contract risk: Code that has not been audited can contain a “mint” function allowing the creator to print extra coins.
  • Liquidity risk: When the marketing stops, daily volume can drop 99 % and you will be unable to sell at any price.
  • Regulatory risk: The European Union’s MiCA law, fully in force since January 2026, allows national regulators to delist tokens that lack a white-paper; delisting freezes trading.
  • Fraud risk: In March 2026 the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) added 14 crypto domain names to its warning list; all had used paid influencers to reach first-time buyers.

Remember: the higher the promised return, the nearer it sits to the red section on the risk dial. There is no customer service in DeFi (decentralized finance). If you send coins to the wrong address or approve a scam contract, the money is gone the same way cash thrown in a river is gone.

Benefits – why people still bother

Despite the risks, some investors allocate a small slice of their portfolio to micro-caps because:

  1. A 5 % position that rises 20× turns a boring portfolio into a great year.
  2. Learning to use wallets, sign transactions and read block explorers teaches skills that are valuable in tech jobs.
  3. Participating in liquidity pools pays yield, sometimes 20-40 % annualised, although impermanent loss can wipe the gain out.

None of these reasons override the rule: only play with money you can afford to lose.

Calendar note – Paris Blockchain Week

If you prefer learning in person, Paris Blockchain Week (15-16 April 2026) offers a free “beginner track” with workshops on wallet set-up and tax reporting. Student tickets cost EUR 49; main conference tickets cost EUR 399. Do not buy anything on the expo floor without first comparing prices on your phone; limited-edition coins sold at booths have a 90 % chance of trading below issue price within one week, historical data from Token2049 (2023-25) shows.

Key take-aways

  1. Viral lists are advertisements, not research.
  2. Market-cap size matters: sub-100 M tokens are lottery tickets, not investments.
  3. Use regulated exchanges for your first purchase; withdraw to your own wallet only after you have written down the seed phrase twice on paper.
  4. Pre-define entry, exit and stop-loss levels before you click “buy”.
  5. Record every trade; the tax office will want the numbers even if the coins go to zero.
